September 2014 - Ice Bucket Challenge
Ronnie Fletcher and Stuart Watts braved the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' and very kindly donated £25 and £20 respectively to nsif. Thank you both!
September 2014 - Donation by Julie Fice
Our friend Julie Fice, who lives in London, made a generous donation of £20. Whilst she is unable to attend events held locally she made the effort to meet up with the riders at Tower Bridge at the end of the 'Bridge to Bridge' Bike Challenge and we are very grateful for her support. Thank you Julie.
May 2nd and 3rd 2014 - Coast to Coast Cycle challenge
Spirits were high as riders John Pye, Phil Nevet, Ray Lydon, Mark Hiley, Dave Sayers and Ronnie Fletcher, together with the support vehicle crew Nicky Swan (plus badge !) and young Noah set off for Lancaster at tea-time on Friday 1st May. The destination was the Penny Bridge Hotel where after a few Wainwrights the challenge ahead did not seem too bad.
Saturday morning and the weather was reasonable as we set off for Morecambe and a "before" photo at the Eric Morecambe statue on the seafront - Bridlington 170 miles !
Within a few miles of setting off from Morecambe, the weather became cold, wet and unusually the wind was a strong easterly (head wind) and these combined to make riding conditions very difficult. Arriving in Settle, a stop for over-shoes was made before taking on the steep climb out of town which proved to be too much for all but the king of the mountains, Ronnie Fletcher, with each of the other riders being forced to walk at least some of the 20% gradient.
Weather conditions worsened as the many hills were climbed and the miles were clocked up so that we were running well behind schedule and eventually completed the 112 miles to York by 9.45pm on the Sarurday night, some 12 hours after setting off!
A full English breakfast on the Sunday morning was eaten whilst watching the rain teeming down outside, so after fashioning rain jackets from some spare bin bags, we set off on the remaining 62 miles to Bridlington. Despite the bad weather, we made good time and the rain eventually stopped by the mid-afternoon stop in Driffield, with our arrival on Bridlington seafront at 4.15 bathed in sunshine with a welcoming party of family and friends - never have fish and chips (and champagne !) tasted so good.
Despite the gruelling nature of the ride, and a few "never again" moments, this coast to coast was very worthwhile with £1,416.25, (including gift aid) raised in sponsorship for nsif.
Special thanks go to Ronnie Fletcher for organising the ride and drumming up a lot of support, again, for this excellent cause, but thanks also to the other riders and support team who gave up their weekend to take part.
Here's to the next one !

Friday 17th October was the date for our latest Video Horse Race Night, with Supper, Raffle, Auction and Disco. Following our previous two successful Race Nights held at the Hallmark, North Ferriby, we were delighted that our change of venue to Staff House, Hull University was so well received by the 175 guests in attendance. Angela had worked tirelessly for many weeks leading up to the event, securing from supporters and local businesses more than 60 raffle prizes and 9 Auction items, and her organisation of the evening ensured that all ran smoothly. Once again, we were grateful for the services of the "Fab Four" ladies, Helen, Nadine, Pauline and Alison who took all of the bets on the racing and made the payouts to the lucky punters. Big Phil, from R N Promotions, kept the evening moving along and did really well with the Auction (probably a good job that Horse 1 won the Auction Race !). The quality, quantity and service of the supper was first class, so thanks are also due to Jenny, Lynn and staff from the University of Hull, who helped to make the evening such a success. The combined efforts of everyone involved and the great support from all there on the night resulted in the event raising a tremendous sum of £7,682.60 for nsif, including a generous amount of £3,500 from Santander Match Funding Scheme, which takes the total raised by our local branch of the charity to £52,341.03 - all of which helps to further the research work of Professor Raisman and brings a cure for spinal injury a little closer. We are so grateful for the generosity shown and hope that the imminent news of a breakthrough will be just reward for everyone's efforts to date.

Thank you Alison for completing the walk in torrential rain!!
