1 - 3 July 2016 - Bridge to Bridge 2 Bike Challenge
After the success of the first bridge to bridge bike challenge in 2013 which saw 5 riders travel from the Humber Bridge to Tower Bridge, London, in early 2016 plans were put in place for its successor. Coninuing the "bridge" theme which represents the essence of the groundbreaking treatment for spinal injury being perfected by Professor Raisman and his team, this time, eight riders signed up for the 280 mile challenge from the Forth Bridge, Edinburgh to the Humber Bridge. We were fortunate to have the excellent help of Dave Waters as the driver of our support vehicle, ably assisted by Steven Pye. Day 1 of the challenge saw us leave the Forth Bridge viewing area at 8.15am, with 130 miles ahead of us that day. After some 8,500 feet of climbing and every type of weather that the British summer can throw at you - except sunshine! - we arrived in Morpeth 12 hours later. The next day was a shorter ride of about 80 miles but was challenging, seeing a seemingly endless chain of climbs and descents, before a relatively flat ride in to SandHutton, near Thirsk, where we all enjoyed some excellent cooking and hospitality from the host/chef of the Kings Arms. Our final day in the saddle was pretty flat, covering the 70 miles back to the Humber Bridge for a photo-shoot before finally returning to a welcome from some 70 family and friends at the Beech Tree, Kirk Ella. The challenge proved to be a great success with fantastic support from a large number of donors, helping us to raise a grand total of £6,311.97 (including gift aid). Special thanks go to the following for their support of and input to the event: Tony Good of Broach Hill Garage for providing the support vehicle; the proprietors of Morpeth Lodge Guest House and the Kings Arms, Sandhutton, each of whom made a sizeable donation to nsif; The Beech Tree, for providing us with a buffet and venue for the home-coming; Angela Pye for arranging the welcome home party; the Support Crew of Dave Waters and Steven Pye and, of course, the team of riders who gave up their time to undertake this challenge: Andrew Cooney, Ronnie Fletcher; Richard Hardy; Ray Lydon; Phil Nevet; John Pye; Dave Sayers and Grant Stables - Many thanks to you all - we are confident that a cure for spinal injury is moving ever closer as a result of fund raising activities of this nature !
19 June 2016 - Jonny and Hollie Lees Hull 10k
After many weeks of late night training runs, the big day finally arrived for husband and wife team Jonny and Hollie. Jonny was a relative veteran of the race, usually wearing a spiderman mask! Whilst Hollie was making her race debut. Supported by a number of family members on the day, the pair battled against hot conditions to finish in a very respectable time. Well done to you both - a fantastic effort and thank you for raising an amazing £846.25 in sponsorship!!
Unfortunately, we received the terrible news that Terry Davidson had passed away. Terry was a family friend, known to me most of my life, being the father of my best friend Kerry McDonald. Our thanks and condolences go to Alma, Tina and Kerry for donating the collection taken at Terry's funeral to nsif, a charity in which Terry showed great interest and belief. All our love, Angie, John, Steve and Bobby xxxx

A total of 82 people took part in the quiz and enjoyed a chip butty supper before the 'Old Friends' were crowed champions and took away their prize of a hamper of goodies. Thanks go to everyone who supported the quiz and raised a total of £678.00 on the night with special thanks to our good friend, Alison Branton (and Lloyds TSB), who in helping to organise the event will attract match funding of £500 taking the total raised £1,178.00.

We are delighted to have received 257 entries, including a large number of "first timers" and we (and the team !) are very grateful for your support. Each participant has predicted the score of all of Hull City's matches this season, earning 3 points for a correct score and 1 point for a correct result (i.e. win/draw/loss). From the entry fee of £2, this competition will raise £257 for nsif, with the remaining money being paid out in prizes to the top three points scorers at the end of the season in May 2016. Special thanks to Bobby Pye for organising and administering this competition and good luck to everyone taking part !
14th June 2015 - Hull 10k
Weather conditions were perfect for this year's Hull 10k! 'Team Nicholls' was made up of seven runners (left to right - Sam, Josh, Angela, Jo, John, Bobby and Glen), who all trained hard to raise vital funds for nsif. A massive thank you to Team Nicholls and everyone who supported the event. Total amount raised £674.00. Same time next year?!!
May 2nd and 3rd 2014 - Coast to Coast Cycle challenge
Spirits were high as riders John Pye, Phil Nevet, Ray Lydon, Mark Hiley, Dave Sayers and Ronnie Fletcher, together with the support vehicle crew Nicky Swan (plus badge !) and young Noah set off for Lancaster at tea-time on Friday 1st May. The destination was the Penny Bridge Hotel where after a few Wainwrights the challenge ahead did not seem too bad.
Saturday morning and the weather was reasonable as we set off for Morecambe and a "before" photo at the Eric Morecambe statue on the seafront - Bridlington 170 miles !
Within a few miles of setting off from Morecambe, the weather became cold, wet and unusually the wind was a strong easterly (head wind) and these combined to make riding conditions very difficult. Arriving in Settle, a stop for over-shoes was made before taking on the steep climb out of town which proved to be too much for all but the king of the mountains, Ronnie Fletcher, with each of the other riders being forced to walk at least some of the 20% gradient.
Weather conditions worsened as the many hills were climbed and the miles were clocked up so that we were running well behind schedule and eventually completed the 112 miles to York by 9.45pm on the Sarurday night, some 12 hours after setting off!
A full English breakfast on the Sunday morning was eaten whilst watching the rain teeming down outside, so after fashioning rain jackets from some spare bin bags, we set off on the remaining 62 miles to Bridlington. Despite the bad weather, we made good time and the rain eventually stopped by the mid-afternoon stop in Driffield, with our arrival on Bridlington seafront at 4.15 bathed in sunshine with a welcoming party of family and friends - never have fish and chips (and champagne !) tasted so good.
Despite the gruelling nature of the ride, and a few "never again" moments, this coast to coast was very worthwhile with £1,416.25, (including gift aid) raised in sponsorship for nsif.
Special thanks go to Ronnie Fletcher for organising the ride and drumming up a lot of support, again, for this excellent cause, but thanks also to the other riders and support team who gave up their weekend to take part.
Here's to the next one !

Our next-door neighbour Rob Watts is away in France when the Hull 10k takes place on June 3rd, but very kindly completed his 10k run a couple of weeks ago and raised a fantastic sum of £325 in sponsorship.
In addition to supporting the Charity, the run marked for Rob a further stage in his recovery from a serious accident. Last year, Rob was travelling in the Far East and on 27th November, 2011, whilst riding a motorbike in Kow Lak, Phuket, Thailand was involved in a collision with a bus. Rob ended up in intensive care with two blood clots to the brain, a double fracture of the jaw, a dislocated index finger and a badly broken right hand that required six hours of surgery to reconstruct it.
Due to his experiences he would like to publicise the fact that it is not advisable to ride motorbikes in South East Asia, however tempting it may seem. Rob survived, many, sadly don't and it is due to the skill and care of the Thai doctors and nurses that he has been able to make a full recovery. He is now fit and well and has a place to train as a Chemistry teacher at Newcastle in September, 2012. Rob runs regularly and enjoys keeping fit and his fitness was said to be a major factor in his recovery. Thanks again for your efforts Rob and good luck for the future!

When Claire heard that we had a place available in this year's London Marathon, she didn't hesitate in taking up the challenge. This was Claire's first marathon and, from the outset, it was clear that her commitment and determination would see her through what would be a tremendous feat of endurance for anyone. With the support of her husband Shaun, and her children Emily and Josh, she put in the miles, gradually building her training runs up to 20 miles! She courageously completed the marathon in a superb time of 5hrs, 7mins and 50secs which saw her leave Suzannah Reid of BBC Breakfast TV in her wake! We can only imagine the tremendous effort that Claire must have committed in meeting this challenge and we are extremely grateful to her.
